Digital Possessions

In this latest Futures Feed – Digital Possessions – we explore four connected themes of innovation and the opportunities these present for brands to design for a new digital landscape.

Today, we are placing increasing value on our digital lives and what this can offer us, especially in terms of accessing and owning virtual belongings. We are looking to brands to embrace the creativity, security, freedom, pleasure and sense of identity that the digital space offers. And as the line between physical and digital becomes blurred, brands have an opportunity to embrace this movement by creating new and exciting experiences across a broad range of sectors, products and services.

Four key themes of Change

1. Extending Identities

Brands should embrace the freedom of the digital space and provide the right platform for people to explore creativity, enriching content and new forms of personal expression.

2. Limitless Perspectives

Brands can open up the idea of ‘limitless’ journeys and virtual experiences to both better everyday lives and create rare or special experiences.

3. Virtual Lightweighting

Brands must consider designing breakthrough, sustainable online experiences, assets and digital languages.

4. Simulated Playground

Brands using simulated reality and speculative design can explore concepts and ideas through prototyping to test products and their subsequent popularity.

What is the opportunity in this space?

– To match our conscious choices and mindset IRL, brands should favour, inspire and encourage clean, digital consumption.

– Brands can enhance our lifestyle and choices by offering experiences that create unique digital memories or a new try-before-you-buy model.
